RCUSA applauds Biden v. Texas ruling

Washington, DC – On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled in Biden v. Texas that the Biden administration has the authority to terminate the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” (RMX) policy, also known as the “Migrant Protection Protocols” (MPP). RMX forced tens of thousands of asylum seekers to wait in dangerous conditions in Mexico while their asylum claims were processed in the United States –  placing them in direct danger of violence, extortion, and kidnappings.

“We welcome this news from the the Supreme Court,” said RCUSA Executive Director John Slocum, “and we urge the Biden administration to act swiftly not only in bringing this policy to an end, but also in providing access to asylum for those who have been impacted by ‘Remain in Mexico’. This discriminatory policy separated families and dehumanized Black, Brown, and Indigenous asylum seekers. This ruling is a first step in the work to rebuild asylum protections. We call on  the administration and Congress  to oppose the codification of similarly anti-immigrant policies such as Title 42, while supporting efforts to ensure the timely and fair processing of people seeking asylum, and facilitating greater access to fundamental legal services.”
