RCUSA appoints John Slocum as Executive Director

Washington, DC – After  serving as interim executive director of Refugee Council USA for more than a year, John Slocum has been appointed by the board of directors as RCUSA’s new executive director. Prior to joining RCUSA, John most recently worked as an independent consultant providing strategic planning and recruitment services to foundations and nonprofits engaged with human rights, migration, and refugees. He previously worked for 18 years at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, including as director of migration grantmaking initiatives.

“The board is thrilled to announce that John will continue his work with RCUSA as Executive Director,” said Scott Roehm, RCUSA Board Chair and Washington Director at the Center for Victims of Torture. “John stepped into the role as interim just as President Biden was inaugurated, and over this past trying year, John has done more than simply steward RCUSA through this period of transition; he has helped grow RCUSA’s staff and has been a pivotal force in implementing the coalition’s strategic vision.”

John Slocum said “I am grateful to the RCUSA board for this vote of confidence and look forward to continuing to serve alongside our talented and hardworking staff and coalition members as we work to secure welcome, safety, and justice for refugees and other people experiencing forced displacement.”

RCUSA is a diverse coalition advocating for just and humane laws and policies, and the promotion of dialogue and communication among government, civil society, and those who need protection and welcome. Individual RCUSA members do not all address all refugee-related issues, nor do all individual members approach common refugee-related issues identically.
