RCUSA welcomes Kimahli Powell as newest board member

Washington, DC – Kimahli Powell has been elected by the membership of Refugee Council USA to serve as the newest member of the organization’s Board of Directors. At RCUSA’s annual members meeting, coalition executives also re-elected current board members Lourena Gboeah, Rekha Grennan, Erol Kekic, Sarah Ivory, Scott Roehm, and Hans Van de Weerd to the RCUSA Board of Directors.

Kimahli Powell serves as Executive Director of Rainbow Railroad, with a career focus on community building, law and policy, HIV/AIDS, and forced displacement. He holds a Doctors of Law from the University of Victoria. Throughout his tenure as Executive Director, Powell has expanded Rainbow Railroad’s international work, which centers on providing protection to LGBTQI+ people facing persecution.

“We are thrilled to welcome Kimahli Powell to RCUSA’s board” shared John Slocum, RCUSA Executive Director. “His expertise in nonprofit management, international experience, and pivotal work on behalf of forcibly displaced LGBTQI+ people will bring invaluable guidance and perspective to the governance of our coalition.”

“I very much look forward to working with Kimahli Powell and our returning board members” said RCUSA Board Chair Scott Roehm, Washington Director for the Center for Victims of Torture. “The RCUSA coalition continues to grow, bringing organizations together to push for expansive approaches to rebuilding systems of humanitarian protection.”
