URGENT ACTION NEEDED: Tell Our National Leaders to Restore Refugee and Humanitarian Protections
March 17, 2025 marked the 45th anniversary of the day President Jimmy Carter signed the Refugee Act of 1980, enshrining in law a framework for refugee resettlement and the protection of asylum seekers. Yet, the Trump administration’s indefinite pause on refugee resettlement – and sweeping evisceration of our nation’s capacity to welcome refugees and asylum seekers – has ground access to humanitarian protection to a halt.
The U.S. resettlement program as we know it has ended – and absent urgent congressional intervention, it will never be the same. It’s essential that Congress invests in and safeguards refugee and humanitarian programs that process, assist, and welcome refugees from abroad and those integrating in their new homes in the United States. As crucial support for arriving refugees remains unavailable, many refugees and other newcomers who have recently arrived in our communities are at imminent risk of extreme economic insecurity and homelessness.
Despite court intervention, the Trump administration continues to systematically attack refugees, asylum seekers, unaccompanied children, and other immigrants and newcomers – and the communities that welcome them. Leaving vulnerable people with no clear path to safety and cutting off life-sustaining support for new arrivals violates our moral and legal obligations to protect those fleeing violence and persecution.
