Local Congressional Advocacy Opportunities During August Recess
RCUSA Take It Home Advocacy Days & July 29th Digital Day of Action:
Join Us for Local Congressional Advocacy Opportunities
Building on the momentum of RCUSA Advocacy Days in June, RCUSA is hosting Take It Home Advocacy Days as part of an arc of engagement in building lasting relationships with our Members of Congress. The more we get to know each other, the more they understand how important refugees, asylum seekers, and humanitarian groups are to our communities and why it is critical that we welcome them.
Please note that you are absolutely welcome to participate in RCUSA’s Take It Home Advocacy Days, whether or not you took part in our early June Advocacy Days event in Washington, DC.
Ways to Engage Your Members of Congress:
(1) Join RCUSA’s Digital Day of Action – Wednesday, July 29th
We will take these important actions:
- Share your message of welcome on social media. Click here for sample social media posts and graphics (check out the Digital & Social Media Guide on page 2).
- Request a local, in-person meeting with your 2 U.S. Senators and 1 U.S. Representative during the August recess period using our Policy & Legislative Guide (page 2).
- Sign up for support organizing and preparing for your meetings. Click here to let us know if you would like support from our advocacy team. Registrants will be invited to attend a mini-policy and legislative meeting training on Monday, August 3rd from 1pm-2:15pm ET.
(2) Meet with Your Members of Congress In-Person – August (All Month Long!)
Meet with your 2 U.S. Senators and 1 U.S. Representative and share your personal stories and importance of welcoming refugees, asylum seekers, and those in need of humanitarian protection.
In preparing for your in-person congressional meetings in August, check out RCUSA’s Take It Home Advocacy Days Toolkit for social media and policy resources to get ready to engage your Members of Congress locally. You can also check out RCUSA’s August recess advocacy webpage.
Note: Our partners at We Are All America are organizing Virtual National Refugee Advocacy Days from August 17th – August 21st for those who prefer to meet their congressional offices via zoom/phone. Register here by July 17 to join meetings virtually.
Together, we can work toward deepening congressional support for refugee, asylum, and humanitarian programs, strengthening directly-impacted leaders’ advocacy in their own communities, and ensuring a meaningful opportunity for diverse constituents’ voices to be heard by their elected leaders.
