RCUSA Welcomes John Slocum as Interim Executive Director

Washington, DC — Refugee Council USA is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has appointed John Slocum as Interim Executive Director, effective January 20. John replaces Executive Director Adam Hunter, who departs following a successful tenure at RCUSA to serve in the Biden Administration. A former board member, John will be taking a leave from the RCUSA board for the duration of his service as Interim Executive Director.

John has more than 15 years’ experience on migration and refugee issues, including a decade as director of migration grantmaking at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, past board service for Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees, and work as a consultant and executive recruiter for migration-related nonprofits. John is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Relations and a Nonresident Associate Senior Researcher at CIDOB, the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs. He also serves as Co-Coordinator of the Repository on Documentation Related to Disappearances in Mexico.

Scott Roehm, RCUSA board chair and Washington Director for the Center for Victims of Torture, shared: “On behalf of RCUSA’s board we are thrilled that John has taken on the role of Interim Executive Director. He brings a wealth of experience and has the leadership skills and vision to ably steward RCUSA through an important time of transition and opportunity for refugee-serving organizations.”

John noted, “I am very pleased to be able to serve RCUSA in this new capacity, and look forward to working in partnership with its dedicated staff, board, and coalition members. Under the new Administration, RCUSA and its member organization will be pursuing renewed opportunities to advance just and humane policies, and honor the dignity and humanity of those in need of refuge and asylum.”
